Tae-Bo Workout (SET OF 4: Basic, Instructional, Advanced, 8-minute Workout) [VHS] Ventura Distribution Billed as the future of fitness and hawked by numerous celebrities Billy Blankss Tae-Bo actually deserves much of the hype its receiving A mixture of boxing punches and martial arts kicks Tae-Bo is fun and easy One of the best elements of this four-tape set is that the first tape which is 40 minutes long Tae-Bo Instructional lays out the movements you need to successfully complete a workout Once youve mastered the steps you wont have to fast-forward through half the tape to get to the workout nor will your workout be slowed down by the repeated lessons After you feel comfortable with the movements and theyre really quite easy to follow nothing too complicated to trip you up youre ready to move on to Tae-Bo Basics a 27-minute workout 5 minutes of warm-up 18 minutes of Tae-Bo and 4 minutes of cool-down that will have your heart pounding and your body sweating Next comes Advanced a 57-minute workout that will have your heart racing pulse pounding and sweat glands working overtime Theres razzmatazz on the moves with slightly more complicated combinations that should be fairly easy to master if youve completed the first two tapes This video seriously raises the bar on the difficulty factor In addition to the short warm-up the cool-down and the 30 minutes of Tae-Bo Advanced Tae-Bo also includes 18 minutes of muscle-crunching floor work You know youre in trouble when even the guys in the tape have trouble keeping up Make sure you have truly mastered the first two tapes before attempting this one The 8-Minute Workout is a highly compacted workout actually 14 minutes long when you include warm-up and cool-down for those days when youre too short on time for Basic or Advanced While the 8-minute idea is compelling its not an adequate substitute for the longer workouts Blanks a seven-time World Martial Arts champion is a superb instructor providing encouragement and careful instruction if you dont know by the end of the tape to hold in your stomach thats no ones fault but your own The only downside to these tapes is the less-than-exciting music Not only is Tae-Bo great exercise for all levels but the punches and kicks are wonderful for working out stress and aggression This is the aerobics exercise video for people who are bored by aerobics --Jenny Brown A Town Like Alice [VHS] Starmaker Entertainment The Century-America's Time (Boxed Set) [VHS] ABC News Covering the entire 20th century in one video series is an ambitious project but one that Peter Jennings and ABC News are up to In The Century Americas Time a 12-part documentary on six videotapes that is a companion to the book of the same name Jennings guides us through a century of technology and advancement like no other As he says in his introduction to episode 1 Seeds of Change Unlike previous centuries where leadership was defined by royalty and other rulers the 20th century more than any other was shaped by the will and actions of the common man The series is a sweeping presentation of the United States of the 1900s and tries to encompass a mind-boggling amount of history And while at moments the videos may leave you longing for more Jennings does an excellent job of creating smooth segues between disparate pieces The first episode for instance begins with the influx of immigrants at the turn of the century and touches on Jim Crow laws moving pictures planes Henry Ford the sinking of the USS Maine child labor suffragettes the Panama Canal imperialism and more right up to the beginning of World War I The archival footage is stunning and interviews with historians veterans journalists POWs politicians authors celebrities and common people help bring the past to life again Mickey Spillane discusses the speakeasies of the 1920s Dennis Hopper talks about Easy Rider in the 60s Tom Wolfe reads from The Bonfire of the Vanities for the episode on the 80s Eudora Welty E L Doctorow Martin Scorsese John Updike Pat Buchanan Oliver Stone Stephen E Ambrose among many others lend their voices to this documentary Yet despite the great names at times the pictures and people are allowed to speak for themselves without intrusive narration--the stark images of the Challenger explosion or the sad words of a political activist mourning the death of his partner to AIDS are more powerful because of it This chronological tale with the exception of the last episode Then and Now which is arranged thematically is an insightful and poignant reminder of all the marvels--and tragedies--of America in the 20th century --Jenny Brown AM/PM Yoga for Beginners [VHS] Gaiam This yoga set is perfect for busy people who need to work in a way to relax On the a m tape oxygen to breathe as a life force with which to understand our existence--past present and future --Jeff Shannon The Adventures of Indiana Jones (3 Tapes) [VHS] Paramount Set Includes R Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark R Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom R Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade R Indiana Jones and the Treasure of the Peacocks Eye As with Star Wars the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon the cliffhanging movie serials of the past Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes the Jones features tapped into Lucass extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old but popular story model Steven Spielberg directed all three films which are set in the late 1930s and early 40s the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark the spooky Gunga Din -inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence Pro- Temple of Doom people on the other hand believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio One things for sure Harrison Fords swaggering two-fisted self-effacing performance worked like a charm and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series too--Karen Allen Sean Connery as Indys dad Kate Capshaw Ke Huy Quan Amrish Puri Denholm Elliot River Phoenix and John Rhys-Davies among them Years have passed since the last film another is supposedly in the works but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past --Tom Keogh Baseball - A Film by Ken Burns [VHS] Pbs Home Video Ken Burns tops himself with this epic of American history told in nine innings with a skilled narration by John Chancellor and the voices of Paul Newman Jason Robards Billy Crystal and other stars The series spans 150 years starting with the myth-debunking tale of baseballs true beginnings -- when it was a game one degree above mayhem Then mirror of America itself -- the passions prejudices and ambitions that have shape the country After the national success of his 11-hour epic The Civil War --the highest-rated miniseries in public-television history--many wondered if Ken Burns could capture the same energy and passion with smaller subjects His reply the 18-hour history of Americas greatest sport Baseball not only quieted these worries it also perhaps surpassed his prior achievement Massive in scope it covers more than 100 years exhausting in detail and filled with celebrities journalists politicians historians and the men who played the game Burnss romantic love letter to the game achieves the impossible even those who hate baseball cant help but become immersed in it This is because Burns doesnt just detail the great players and the memorable plays and games he also presents baseball as a cultural and social mirror reflecting the beauty and hypocrisy of the nation that created it Divided into nine innings two hours each in length the video examines complex social issues such as segregation racial inequality its section on Jackie Robinson baseballs first African American player should be required school viewing labor battles between owners and players politics technology and gender conflicts among others Then of course theres fascinating footage and biographies on the players--troubled icons such as baseballs tradition and preserved its invincibility --Dave McCoy The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries [VHS] Warner Home Video The second most-watched miniseries after Roots of all time The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover Meggie Carson Rachel Ward while seeking advancement in his clergyman career The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings Barbara Stanwyck who won an Emmy for her work as Meggies tough grandmother Jean Simmons Richard Kiley Christopher Plummer Bryan Brown and Mare Winningham Chamberlain who was something of the king of the miniseries form at the time is very good in the lead as is the often-underrated Ward Their affair is indeed irresistible to watch which proves to be true too of the storys thick weave of church politics forbidden desire
