Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video This is a GREAT movie and will love Disneys adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right thanks to some memorable tunes including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and the title song and some endearingly cute comic relief We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply wont have it this uppity Cinderella thinking shes going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart but perseverance animal buddies and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout Its a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business particularly Cinderellas rodent pals dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer Theres also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke Its a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying --David Kronke The Little Mermaid (Fully Restored Special Edition) (Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Disney Walt Disney Home Video miss classified should be Used Acceptable From the moment that Prince Erics ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow suddenly recaptured that magic that had been dormant for thirty years In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to spend a day warm on the sand Ariel trades her voice to Ursula the Sea Witch classically voiced by Pat Carroll for a pair of legs Ariel can only succeed if she receives true loves kiss in a few days time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian a loudmouth seagull and a flounder The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form witty and relevant and they advance the story go on hum a few bars of Under the Sea Mermaid put animation back on the studios to do list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters A modern Disney classic --Keith Simanton Peter Pan (Fully Restored 45th Anniversary Limited Edition) (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) [VHS] Walt Disney Walt Disney Home Video Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films it instills an element of childlike wonder The 1953 version of James M Barries story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book Barries wondrous focus on childs play is the key to its longevity kids who dont grow up shadows that run away from their owners pirates a fairy and the magic ability to fly In short you cant help wishing the adventure would happen to you Fueled by a few memorable songs the stunner being You Can Fly and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook Disneys version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade Unlike some classics Peter Pan never ages along the way --Doug Thomas Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video WALT DISNEYS MASTERPIECE Along with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 the anthology set contains a third disc that examines a segment of both movies in detail Each segment has an introduction that has experts including Leonard Maltin producer Roy E Disney or the animators setting up the pieces history Notes on the music and dozens of design photos are included on all the segments although others offer more intriguing features Abandoned animation is shown on many segments as are a few behind-the-scenes shorts the most intriguing are experts from Walt Disneys hosted documentaries on how his company made movies As for the photos they are awkwardly catalogued and only the most patient of viewers would want to look at all of them In some segments though these images are entertainingly produced as a story reel presenting these images--rough animation sketches pastel paintings--with the musical accompaniment For those looking for a more well-rounded view of the films the two one-hour documentaries on each films disc lay the groundwork but none of the anthology looks at how the first film was seen through the years or gives time to anyone who wasnt gung-ho about every element of the films There is hardly a mention of embarrassing stereotypes that were matted and still are out of the Pastoral segment or the intriguing aspect of the film as a 60s icon for the ultimate head-trip Disney does let their guard down to show sequences that were being readied in 1940 for future editions including a recently restored short scored to Clair de Lune Most tantalizing is a look at how the special effects were done in the original film The guide is a scrapbook that one of the technicians kept and was discovered only in 1990 Fans can only hope a reproduction will be made available someday --Doug Thomas Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys Classic The film that officially signaled Disneys animation renaissance following The Little Mermaid and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured It relates the story of Belle a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father when he inadvertently offends the Beast a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself Belle boldly takes her fathers place imprisoned in the Beasts gloomy mansion Naturally Belle teaches the Beast to love What makes this such a dazzler besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters the Beasts mansion is overrun by quipping dancing household items is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late lamented lyricist Howard Ashman The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar and Menkens score scored a trophy as well The downright funniest song is Gaston a louts paean to himself including the immortal line I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting Be Our Guest is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage Since Ashmans passing animated musicals havent quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit sophistication and pure joy --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video This video is the original Walt Disneys Junglebook Disneys 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling the film goes its own way as Disney animation will but the strong characters and smart casting George Sanders as the villainous tiger Shere Khan make it one of the studios stronger feature-length cartoons Songs include The Bare Necessities and Trust in Me --Tom Keogh The Lion King II: Simba's Pride [VHS] WALT DISNEY HOME VIDEO Walt Disney Home Video Another made-for-video sequel to a Disney masterpiece As with the Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas sequels most of the recognizable vocal talents return creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever We pick up the story as the lion king Simba voiced by Matthew Broderick and Nala Moira Kelly have a new baby cub a girl named Kiara Neve Campbell Like her father before she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands where lions loyal to the evil Scar who died in the original have lived with revenge in their hearts The leader Zira a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette schemes to use her son Kovu Jason Marsden to destroy Simba As luck with have it Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love This all sounds familiar since all of Disneys straight-to-video sequels have played it very safe nearly repeating the originals story tone and pace Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production Besides the two screenplay credits there are eight other writers credited for additional written material The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to other animated videos In fact the film played in European theaters For kids the sequel will be a favorite The comic antics of Timon Nathan Lane and Pumba Ernie Sabella are enjoyable as is Andy Dick as Nuka the mixed-up older son of Zira And theres plenty of action The best element is the music Relying on more African-influenced music the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disneys other sequels Ziras song of revenge My Lullaby was cowritten by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon The standout opening number He Lives in You was created for the Lion King Broadway smash and now finds a whole new audience --Doug Thomas Tae-Bo Workout: Instructional and Basic (Tae-Bo: The Ultimate Total Body Workout for Men & Women) [VHS] Ventura Distribution Energizing Explosive Powerful Video This is a GREAT movie will LOVE A Disney classic that actually is a classic Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo the songs rarely as haunting or just plain weird the characters rarely so well defined The film pits the cold cruel heartless world that cant accept abnormality against a plucky and mute hero Jumbo Jr Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears His mother sticks up for him and is shackled Hes jeered by children an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbos ears even though the youngsters ears are also ungainly used by the circus folk and demoted to appearing with the clowns Only the decent Timothy Q Mouse looks out for the little guy Concerns about the un-PC Jim Crow crows who mock Dumbo with the wonderful When I See an Elephant Fly should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast If you dont mist up during the Baby Mine scene you may be legally pronounced dead --Keith Simanton Tae-Bo Workout (SET OF 4: includes 18 minutes of muscle-crunching floor work You know youre in trouble when even the guys in the tape have trouble keeping up Make sure you have truly mastered the first two tapes before attempting this one The 8-Minute Workout is a highly compacted workout actually 14 minutes long when you include warm-up and cool-down for those days when youre too short on time for Basic or Advanced While the 8-minute idea is compelling its not an adequate substitute for the longer workouts Blanks a seven-time World Martial Arts champion is a superb instructor providing encouragement and careful
