Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right thanks to some memorable tunes including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and the title song and some endearingly cute comic relief We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply wont have it this uppity Cinderella thinking shes going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart but perseverance animal buddies and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout Its a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business particularly Cinderellas rodent pals dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer Theres also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke Its a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying --David Kronke Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video One of the brightest nuggets from Disneys golden age this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world with scores of major and minor characters including fauna and fowl each with a distinct identity When you watch Snow Whites intricate graceful movements of fingers arms and head all in one shot it is not the technical brilliance of Disneys artists that leaps out at you but the very spirit of her engaging girl-woman character When the wicked queens poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it Based on the Grimm fairy tale Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal in mythic terms with the psychological foundation for growing up Its a crowning achievement and should not be missed --Tom Keogh Moonwalker [VHS] Sony Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) [VHS] WALT DISNEY Walt Disney Home Video Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal Alice voiced by Kathryn Beaumont has all the anticipated experiences shrinking and growing meeting the White Rabbit having tea with the Mad Hatter etc Characterization is very strong and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carrolls eccentric creations For a Disney film however it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience --Tom Keogh Beauty and the Beast (Disney Special when he inadvertently offends the Beast a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself Belle boldly takes her fathers place imprisoned in the Beasts gloomy mansion Naturally Belle teaches the Beast to love What makes this such a dazzler besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters the Beasts mansion is overrun by quipping dancing household items is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late lamented lyricist Howard Ashman The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar and Menkens score scored a trophy as well The downright funniest song is Gaston a louts paean to himself including the immortal line I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting Be Our Guest is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage Since Ashmans passing animated musicals havent quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit sophistication and pure joy --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Groundbreaking on several counts not the least of which was an innovative use of animation and stereophonic sound this ambitious Disney feature has lost nothing to time since its release in 1940 Classical music was interpreted by Disney animators resulting in surreal fantasy and playful escapism Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra provided the music for eight segments by the composers Tchaikovsky Moussorgsky Stravinsky Beethoven Ponchielli Bach Dukas and Schubert Not all the sequences were created equally but a few are simply glorious such as Night on Bald Mountain The Sorcerers Apprentice and The Nutcracker Suite The animation ranges from subtly delicate to fiercely bold The screen bursts with color and action as creatures transmute and convention is thrust aside The painstaking detail and saturated hues are unique to this film unmatched even by more advanced technology --Rochelle OGorman The Pirates of Penzance [VHS] MCA Universal When New York theatrical producer Joseph Papp decided to bring Gilbert and Sullivan to Broadway he added typically broad bold strokes to make their singular operetta format meaningful to 1980s audiences In The Pirates of Penzance Papp had a story that offered a mixture of potential action and comedy that was less arcane than other G S chestnuts which Papps production underlined by playing up its antic conflict between its hapless titular pirates and the citizens of Penzance the Cornish town targeted for plunder Adding to the new productions mainstream allure was the theatrical debut for erstwhile country-rock siren Linda Ronstadt as the virginal Mabel along with a plum role for another putative pop heartthrob Rex Smith as the good pirate Frederic Naturally such amendments piqued complaints from self-appointed G S purists for whom the duos original satirical edge and theatrical innovation were obscured if not ossified by their canons patina of respectability Happily for the rest of us Papps cheeky revisions are generally on the money and this 1983 film version preserves them with unusual fidelity Instead of opening up his production with location shooting or intricate editing director Wilford Leach savors the artifice of its stage sets and hokey colorful costuming celebrating the genres proud theatrical legacy The cast meanwhile tears into the farcical plot with elan led by Kevin Kline as the Pirate King a role perfect for his skill at lampooning masculine bravado not to mention his underexposed generally strong singing Broadway veteran George Rose proves the very model of the modern Major-General Stanley and Angela Lansbury added to the films cast for marquee value again shows her mettle as the ditzy maid Ruth Ronstadt justifies Papps gamble having trained rigorously to meet Sullivans acrobatic melodies--indeed this project marked her commitment to grow beyond rock confirmed with her subsequent exploration of classic pop with arranger-conductor Nelson Riddle --Sam Sutherland Lady and the Tramp [VHS] Walt Disney Video Disneys first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video and it is definitely good to get the whole picture One of the studios most original and charming movies the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish street-smart dog named Tramp who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her Sweet funny scenes abound and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture Peggy Lee cowrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the films best-known musical sequences This newly restored version spruces up both sonics and visuals and a letterbox version is available --Tom Keogh Odyssey [VHS] Hallmark Entertainment Andrei Konchalovskys expansive television mini-series production of Homers epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus strikingly played by Armand Assante and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home this film turns into a fantastical adventure Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe Bernadette Peters to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus Eric Roberts Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide the goddess Athena with Greta Scacchi as Odysseuss faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin Jeroen Krabb Christopher Lee and Irene Papas The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean making for a lush lovely visual experience --Sean Axmaker Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas [VHS] Walt Disney Video/Touchstone Home Video For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured well here it is The full title is Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/ fantasy/ horror/ comedy It is based on characters created by Burton the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wees Big Adventure Beetlejuice Edward Scissorhands and the first two Batman movies His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington voice by Danny Elfman who also wrote the songs who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called Christmastown Directed by Henry Selick who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch As Roger Ebert noted in his review some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up it has the kind of offbeat subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen --Jim Emerson
