Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video This is a GREAT movie and will love Disneys adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right thanks to some memorable tunes including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and the title song and some endearingly cute comic relief We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply wont have it this uppity Cinderella thinking shes going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart but perseverance animal buddies and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout Its a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business particularly Cinderellas rodent pals dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer Theres also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke Its a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying --David Kronke Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video WALT DISNEYS MASTERPIECE Along with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 the anthology set contains a third disc that examines a segment of both movies in detail Each segment has an introduction that has experts including Leonard Maltin producer Roy E Disney or the animators setting up the pieces history Notes on the music and dozens of design photos are included on all the segments although others offer more intriguing features Abandoned animation is shown on many segments as are a few behind-the-scenes shorts the most intriguing are experts from Walt Disneys hosted documentaries on how his company made movies As for the photos they are awkwardly catalogued and only the most patient of viewers would want to look at all of them In some segments though these images are entertainingly produced as a story reel presenting these images--rough animation sketches pastel paintings--with the musical accompaniment For those looking for a more well-rounded view of the films the two one-hour documentaries on each films disc lay the groundwork but none of the anthology looks at how the first film was seen through the years or gives time to anyone who wasnt gung-ho about every element of the films There is hardly a mention of embarrassing stereotypes that were matted and still are out of the Pastoral segment or the intriguing aspect of the film as a 60s icon for the ultimate head-trip Disney does let their guard down to show sequences that were being readied in 1940 for future editions including a recently restored short scored to Clair de Lune Most tantalizing is a look at how the special effects were done in the original film The guide is a scrapbook that one of the technicians kept and was discovered only in 1990 Fans can only hope a reproduction will be made available someday --Doug Thomas The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video This video is the original Walt Disneys Junglebook Disneys 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling the film goes its own way as Disney animation will but the strong characters and smart casting George Sanders as the villainous tiger Shere Khan make it one of the studios stronger feature-length cartoons Songs include The Bare Necessities and Trust in Me --Tom Keogh Lady and the Tramp [VHS] Walt Disney Video Excellent condition Disneys first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video and it is definitely good to get the whole picture One of the studios most original and charming movies the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish street-smart dog named Tramp who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her Sweet funny scenes abound and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture Peggy Lee cowrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the films best-known musical sequences This newly restored version spruces up both sonics and visuals and a letterbox version is available --Tom Keogh Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Walt Disneys Classic Masterpiece movie Comes in plastic protective case
enjoyable entertainment for young and old One of the brightest nuggets from Disneys golden age this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world with scores of major and minor characters including fauna and fowl each with a distinct identity When you watch Snow Whites intricate graceful movements of fingers arms and head all in one shot it is not the technical brilliance of Disneys artists that leaps out at you but the very spirit of her engaging girl-woman character When the wicked queens poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it Based on the Grimm fairy tale Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal in mythic terms with the psychological foundation for growing up Its a crowning achievement and should not be missed em --Tom Keogh / em / span class h1 / span span class h1 / / span span class h1 Stills from em Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs / em Click for larger image / / span / r border 0 cellpadding 4 cellspacing 4 width 100 tbody align center valign top mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ dvd/ Disney/ Images/ SnowWhite1 S gif width 300 / / mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ dvd/ Disney/ Images/ SnowWhite2 S gif width 300 / r / / mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ dvd/ Disney/ Images/ SnowWhite3 S gif width 300 / r / / / align center valign top mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ dvd/ Disney/ Images/ SnowWhite4 S gif width 300 / / mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ dvd/ Disney/ Images/ SnowWhite5 S gif width 300 / / mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ dvd/ Disney/ Images/ SnowWhite6 S gif width 300 / / r / / align center valign top mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ dvd/ Disney/ Images/ SnowWhite7 S gif width 300 / / mg height 200 src http / / g-ecx images-amazon com/ images/ G/ 01/ Naughty Marietta [VHS] MGM (Warner) Rose Marie (1936) [VHS] MGM (Warner) Riverdance - The Show [VHS] Columbia Tristar Home Video Riverdance--The Show is a cultural phenomenon that defies criticism for the enthusiastic and leaves everyone else scratching their heads The wonderfully talented cast headed by the Riverdance Irish Dance Company bewitchingly spins and stomps its Celtic folk choreography featuring numerous breathless solos by Michael Flatley since departed and Jean Butler The mellifluous Riverdance Orchestra boasts Davy Spillane who coaxes plaintive lamentations out of a peculiar instrument that resembles a bagpipe in a metal leg brace For Enya fans there is the sound-alike choral group Anuna who casts a similarly New Age-style vocal spell Also thrown into the mix are such disparate folk traditions as American gospel and Spanish flamenco Though its only 70 minutes long Riverdance is repetitive by half But judging from the ecstatic audience ovations and the continued foot-stomping during and after the curtain calls too much is still not enough --Richard Natale Student Prince (1954) [VHS] MGM (Warner) Yellow Submarine [VHS] MGM (Video & DVD) Guaranteed to work or your money back - PLEASE NOTE ALL MONIES FROM THIS SALE GO TO A 501 C 3 NO KILL ANIMAL SHELTER This restored animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work thats been substantially improved by its technical facelift not just supersized with extra footage Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late 60s and a minor milestone in animation The music represents the quartets zenith-- Rubber Soul Revolver and Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band The story line cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers is a broad feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys Visually designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles day-glo palette and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film Edelmanns animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion which works wonderfully with such terrific songs High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are literally flat archetypes but thats missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy campy fun of the visuals Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat --Sam Sutherland
