is a roundup of unforgettable new characters including Jessie the Cowgirl and Stinky Pete the prospector Winner of the Golden Globe R award for Best Picture this box office smash is full of laugh-out-loud humor wonderful music and eye-popping animation John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages Like the few great movie sequels Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here as we find out Woody voiced by Tom Hanks is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular 60s childrens show When a greedy collector takes Woody Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen launches a rescue mission with Andys other toys To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since well the first Toy Story Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature Pixar shows how much technology has advanced the human characters look more human backgrounds are superior and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling And its a hoot for kids and adults The film is packed with spoofs easily accessible in-jokes and inspired voice casting with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates the filmmakers are storytellers first Woodys heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U S two other outstanding 1999 animated features The Iron Giant Princess Mononoke could not it became a huge box-office hit --Doug Thomas Toy Story [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video There is greatness in film that can be discussed dissected and talked about late into the night Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed and nary a word needs to be spoken This kind of entertainment is what they used to call movie magic and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second much like another film innovator Walt Disney The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more Two keen retrospectives are new one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the films impact The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips Theres a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets Missing besides the second film which will be released separately is the effects- and music-only tracks Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5 1 track The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer both versions are eye-popping A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box Lasseters story is universal and magical what do toys do when theyre not played with Cowboy Woody voiced by Tom Hanks Andys favorite bedroom toy tries to calm the other toys some original some classic during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party when newer toys may replace them Sure enough Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen is the new toy that takes over the throne Buzz has a crucial flaw though--he believes hes the real Buzz Lightyear not a toy Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting including Don Rickles as Mr Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur The director-animator won a special Oscar for the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film In other words the movie is great --Doug Thomas font face Verdana Arial The Lion King (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Not an ideal choice for younger kids this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production The story finds a lion cub son of a king sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle The little hero finds his way into the circle of life with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place Characters are very strong vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific the jokes are aimed as much if not more at adults than kids the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features But be cautious this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd --Tom Keogh Anybody who struts around with Simbas hard-won authority deserves this royal DVD read-along from Disney Kids can recoil at Uncle Scars dastardly deeds en espa ol and discover that hakuna matata sounds pretty much the same in Spanish French Italian or German And should the dynamic storytelling fail to thrill your 4- to 12-year-old fan a flurry of other interactive options await Toggle to Songs for sing-along renditions of movie hits including I Just Cant Wait to Be King and on to Music Videos where Elton John roars soundtrack favorites Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M groove to Hakuna Matata The Vocabulary feature allows for see-and-say mastery of a list of wildlife while the Game section allows players to match paw and hoof prints to the proper beast and reassemble the scattered skeletal remains of an elephant Original cast voices are featured and grownups will be pleased by the packages reading component --Tammy La Gorce Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right thanks to some memorable tunes including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and the title song and some endearingly cute comic relief We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply wont have it this uppity Cinderella thinking shes going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart but perseverance animal buddies and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout Its a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business particularly Cinderellas rodent pals dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer Theres also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke Its a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying --David Kronke Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys Classic The film that officially signaled Disneys animation renaissance following The Little Mermaid and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured It relates the story of Belle a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father when he inadvertently offends the Beast a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself Belle boldly takes her fathers place imprisoned in the Beasts gloomy mansion Naturally Belle teaches the Beast to love What makes this such a dazzler besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters the Beasts mansion is overrun by quipping dancing household items is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late lamented lyricist Howard Ashman The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar and Menkens score scored a trophy as well The downright funniest song is Gaston a louts paean to himself including the immortal line I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting Be Our Guest is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage Since Ashmans passing animated musicals havent quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit sophistication and pure joy --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video One of the brightest nuggets from Disneys golden age this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world with scores of major and minor characters including fauna and fowl each with a distinct identity When you watch Snow Whites intricate graceful movements of fingers arms and head all in one shot it is not the technical brilliance of Disneys artists that leaps out at you but the very spirit of her engaging girl-woman character When the wicked queens poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it Based on the Grimm fairy tale Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal in mythic terms with the psychological foundation for growing up Its a crowning achievement and should not be missed --Tom Keogh The Little Mermaid (Fully Restored Special Edition) (Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Disney Walt Disney Home Video From the moment that Prince Erics ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow suddenly recaptured that magic that had been dormant for thirty years In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to spend a day warm on the sand Ariel trades her voice to Ursula the Sea Witch classically voiced by Pat Carroll for a pair of legs Ariel can only succeed if she receives true loves kiss in a few days time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian a loudmouth seagull and a flounder The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form witty and relevant and they advance the story go on hum a few bars of Under the Sea Mermaid put animation back on the studios to do list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters A modern Disney classic --Keith Simanton Fans awaiting a revamp of The Little Mermaid on DVD should be pleased to know that the new fully restored version gets the treatment it deserved all along The Special Edition is presented in 1 78 aspect ratio as opposed to the original 1 66 presentation and gone is the grainy original transfer which had Ariels mottled complexion looking like she spent some time in a tanning bed Various crew members chime in on the audio commentary track but most dominant is composer Alan Menken who adds in previously taped interviews with the late lyricist Howard Ashman a welcome surprise Theres also a 45-minute making of documentary in which everyone from animators to Jeffrey Katzenberg and Leonard Maltin reflect the limp state of Disney animation before Mermaid kicked off its golden reign of the early 90s Another revelation Katzenberg nearly eliminated Part of Your World from the movie after a hyperactive kid sitting in front of him appeared restless during a test screening Other features a documentary on Hans Christian Andersen and the tragedy of his personal life that inspired his much darker original ending The mermaid unable to stab the prince in the heart after he marries another turns into sea foam Included is an animated short of Andersens The Little Match Girl a tale so depressing--again reflecting the loneliness in Andersens own life--its not really clear how it ever became a beloved bedtime story Theres also a sing-along feature which jumps right to the musical numbers with words appearing onscreen Deleted scenes include one unused song Silence is Golden and various early sketches of alternate takes One curious addition is a virtual Little Mermaid amusement park ride which was originally proposed for Disneyland but failed to come to life Seems digitizing the experience for people to ride in their living room was the consolation prize The only blasphemous feature is a music video of Kiss the Girls reimagined as a Hilary Duff-esque rock song-- minus the charming calypso beat that made it famous --sung by the Hilary Duff-esque Ashley Tisdale High School Musical Aside from that if you own The Little Mermaid in its 1999 incarnation of DVD get the special edition and leave your old one for the kids or the dog to scratch up -- Ellen A Kim / em r / r / r / r / r / span class h1 Stills The Muppet Christmas Carol [VHS] Jim Henson Video Charles Dickens classic holiday story sparkles with humor and whimsy in the hands of the always hilarious Muppets Michael Caine stars as penny-pinching Ebenezer Scrooge in a performance thats anything but bah humbug Alone on Christmas Eve Scrooge is visited by ghosts who transport him to his past present and future -- and its not a pretty sight But along the way he comes upon poor kind humble Bob Cratchit Kermit the Frog and his family including Tiny Tim who teaches Scrooge the true meaning of Christmas Complete with original music and dazzling special effects this heartfelt holiday movie is exceptional entertainment your family will enjoy for every Christmas to come Brian Henson directs his late fathers creations in the Charles Dickens classic the best known and most oft-filmed Christmas story of all time Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit Miss Piggy as Cratchits wife and a host of Muppets including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens taking other primary roles in this bright playful adaptation of the somber tale Or at least it starts brightly enough--the anarchic humor soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past present and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely wasted life Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Hensons Creature Shop developed specially for this film take the reins as the three ghosts While the odd mix of offbeat humor and somber drama undercuts the power of Dickenss drama this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy --Sean Axmaker Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) [VHS] WALT DISNEY Walt Disney Home Video Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal Alice voiced by Kathryn Beaumont has all the anticipated experiences shrinking and growing meeting the White Rabbit having tea with the Mad Hatter etc Characterization is very strong and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carrolls eccentric creations For a Disney film however it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience --Tom Keogh Aladdin (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill The high-tech artwork and graphics look great the characters are strong the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain Jafar voiced by Jonathan Freeman and theres an incredible hook atop the whole thing Robin Williamss frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdins genie Even if one isnt particularly moved by the love story between the title character Scott Weinger and his girlfriend Jasmine Linda Larkin you can easily get lost in Williamss improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried as Jafars parrot --Tom Keogh
