The Lion King (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Not an ideal choice for younger kids this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production The story finds a lion cub son of a king sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle The little hero finds his way into the circle of life with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place Characters are very strong vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific the jokes are aimed as much if not more at adults than kids the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features But be cautious this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd --Tom Keogh Anybody who struts around with Simbas hard-won authority deserves this royal DVD read-along from Disney Kids can recoil at Uncle Scars dastardly deeds en espa ol and discover that hakuna matata sounds pretty much the same in Spanish French Italian or German And should the dynamic storytelling fail to thrill your 4- to 12-year-old fan a flurry of other interactive options await Toggle to Songs for sing-along renditions of movie hits including I Just Cant Wait to Be King and on to Music Videos where Elton John roars soundtrack favorites Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M groove to Hakuna Matata The Vocabulary feature allows for see-and-say mastery of a list of wildlife while the Game section allows players to match paw and hoof prints to the proper beast and reassemble the scattered skeletal remains of an elephant Original cast voices are featured and grownups will be pleased by the packages reading component --Tammy La Gorce Last of the Dogmen [VHS] Hbo Home Video Despite an irritating tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story it wasnt Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist Barbara Hershey search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films As in Kevin Costners Oscar-winning movie however there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning mystery and loss --Tom Keogh Aladdin (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys 1992 animated feature is a triumph of wit and skill The high-tech artwork and graphics look great the characters are strong the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain Jafar voiced by Jonathan Freeman and theres an incredible hook atop the whole thing Robin Williamss frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdins genie Even if one isnt particularly moved by the love story between the title character Scott Weinger and his girlfriend Jasmine Linda Larkin you can easily get lost in Williamss improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried as Jafars parrot --Tom Keogh The African Queen [VHS] CBS/Fox VIdeo The 1951 John Huston classic set in Africa during World War I garnered Humphrey Bogart an Oscar for his role as a hard-drinking riverboat captain in Africa who provides passage for a Christian missionary spinster Katharine Hepburn Taking an instant mutual dislike to one another the two endure rough waters the presence of German soldiers and their own bickering to finally fall into one anothers arms This is classic Huston material--part adventure part quest--but this time with a pair of characters whod all but given up on happiness Bogart a longtime collaborator with Huston on such classics as The Maltese Falcon and Key Largo and Hepburn have never been better and support from frequent Huston crony Robert Morley Beat the Devil also featuring Bogart adds some extra dimension and color --Tom Keogh Moonwalker [VHS] Sony Peter Pan (Fully Restored 45th Anniversary Limited Edition) (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) [VHS] Walt Disney Walt Disney Home Video Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films it instills an element of childlike wonder The 1953 version of James M Barries story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book Barries wondrous focus on childs play is the key to its longevity kids who dont grow up shadows that run away from their owners pirates a fairy and the magic ability to fly In short you cant help wishing the adventure would happen to you Fueled by a few memorable songs the stunner being You Can Fly and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook Disneys version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade Unlike some classics Peter Pan never ages along the way --Doug Thomas The Pirates of Penzance [VHS] MCA Universal When New York theatrical producer Joseph Papp decided to bring Gilbert and Sullivan to Broadway he added typically broad bold strokes to make their singular operetta format meaningful to 1980s audiences In The Pirates of Penzance Papp had a story that offered a mixture of potential action and comedy that was less arcane than other G S chestnuts which Papps production underlined by playing up its antic conflict between its hapless titular pirates and the citizens of Penzance the Cornish town targeted for plunder Adding to the new productions mainstream allure was the theatrical debut for erstwhile country-rock siren Linda Ronstadt as the virginal Mabel along with a plum role for another putative pop heartthrob Rex Smith as the good pirate Frederic Naturally such amendments piqued complaints from self-appointed G S purists for whom the duos original satirical edge and theatrical innovation were obscured if not ossified by their canons patina of respectability Happily for the rest of us Papps cheeky revisions are generally on the money and this 1983 film version preserves them with unusual fidelity Instead of opening up his production with location shooting or intricate editing director Wilford Leach savors the artifice of its stage sets and hokey colorful costuming celebrating the genres proud theatrical legacy The cast meanwhile tears into the farcical plot with elan led by Kevin Kline as the Pirate King a role perfect for his skill at lampooning masculine bravado not to mention his underexposed generally strong singing Broadway veteran George Rose proves the very model of the modern Major-General Stanley and Angela Lansbury added to the films cast for marquee value again shows her mettle as the ditzy maid Ruth Ronstadt justifies Papps gamble having trained rigorously to meet Sullivans acrobatic melodies--indeed this project marked her commitment to grow beyond rock confirmed with her subsequent exploration of classic pop with arranger-conductor Nelson Riddle --Sam Sutherland Odyssey [VHS] Hallmark Entertainment Andrei Konchalovskys expansive television mini-series production of Homers epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus strikingly played by Armand Assante and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home this film turns into a fantastical adventure Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe Bernadette Peters to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus Eric Roberts Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide the goddess Athena with Greta Scacchi as Odysseuss faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin Jeroen Krabb Christopher Lee and Irene Papas The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean making for a lush lovely visual experience --Sean Axmaker Robin Hood (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video A minor classic from Disney this 1973 all-animal all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect Perhaps its the warm chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood Brian Bedford gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian Monica Evans comes up or the way best pal Little John Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero Aw Rob why dontcha just marry the girl Then of course theres the canny casting of the romantic leads as foxes Robin the sly one and Marian the well foxy one The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic Peter Ustinov Andy Devine Terry-Thomas George Lindsey Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman whose decades of work in Disneys animation division helped create the studios rich legacy --Tom Keogh High Road to China [VHS] Warner Home Video
