Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video WALT DISNEYS MASTERPIECE Along with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 the anthology set contains a third disc that examines a segment of both movies in detail Each segment has an introduction that has experts including Leonard Maltin producer Roy E Disney or the animators setting up the pieces history Notes on the music and dozens of design photos are included on all the segments although others offer more intriguing features Abandoned animation is shown on many segments as are a few behind-the-scenes shorts the most intriguing are experts from Walt Disneys hosted documentaries on how his company made movies As for the photos they are awkwardly catalogued and only the most patient of viewers would want to look at all of them In some segments though these images are entertainingly produced as a story reel presenting these images--rough animation sketches pastel paintings--with the musical accompaniment For those looking for a more well-rounded view of the films the two one-hour documentaries on each films disc lay the groundwork but none of the anthology looks at how the first film was seen through the years or gives time to anyone who wasnt gung-ho about every element of the films There is hardly a mention of embarrassing stereotypes that were matted and still are out of the Pastoral segment or the intriguing aspect of the film as a 60s icon for the ultimate head-trip Disney does let their guard down to show sequences that were being readied in 1940 for future editions including a recently restored short scored to Clair de Lune Most tantalizing is a look at how the special effects were done in the original film The guide is a scrapbook that one of the technicians kept and was discovered only in 1990 Fans can only hope a reproduction will be made available someday --Doug Thomas To Kill a Mockingbird (Widescreen) [VHS] Universal Studios Ranked 34 on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 Greatest American Films To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-oriented dramas ever made A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee the film retains a timeless quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter racism in the Depression-era South and remains powerfully resonant in present-day America with its advocacy of tolerance justice integrity and loving responsible parenthood Its tempting to call this an important message movie that should be required viewing for children and adults alike but this riveting courtroom drama is anything but stodgy or pedantic As Atticus Finch the small-town Alabama lawyer and widower father of two Gregory Peck gives one of his finest performances with his impassioned defense of a black man Brock Peters wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman While his children Scout Mary Badham and Jem Philip Alford learn the realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred they also learn to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley Robert Duvall in his brilliant almost completely nonverbal screen debut What emerges from this evocative exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of Harper Lees enduring novel a showcase for some of the finest American acting ever assembled in one film and a rare quality of humanitarian artistry including Horton Footes splendid screenplay and Elmer Bernsteins outstanding score that seems all but lost in the chaotic morass of modern cinema --Jeff Shannon The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video This video is the original Walt Disneys Junglebook Disneys 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling the film goes its own way as Disney animation will but the strong characters and smart casting George Sanders as the villainous tiger Shere Khan make it one of the studios stronger feature-length cartoons Songs include The Bare Necessities and Trust in Me --Tom Keogh Anne of Green Gables [VHS] Walt Disney Video This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomerys classic childrens story is well worth watching with the whole family Produced for Canadian television its one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley an imaginative and headstrong orphan When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake What use is she to us grumbles the gruff Marilla We might be of some use to her answers Matthew who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne As Anne grows up her adventures are both hilarious and moving Its a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green cracks a slate over Gilberts head when he calls her Carrots and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew who confides to Anne that he never went courting because I would have had to say something Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart And as Anne Megan Follows strikes the perfect note maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman --Elisabeth Keating Scarlett (Special Collector's Editon) [VHS] Hallmark This soapy but highly watchable television sequel to Gone with the Wind the most popular Hollywood movie ever made has nothing to do with memories of a vanished antebellum South But it does end up in Ireland where the determined Scarlett OHara Butler played with frosty passion by Joanne Whalley-Kilmer turns hard times into an opportunity by buying the ancestral home of her family Before that happens however Scarlett fights to win back the estranged Rhett Butler manfully portrayed by Timothy Dalton often seen in the company of other women struggles for control over the homestead Tara and gets caught in yet another compromising position with poor Ashley Wilkes Stephen Collins The troubles never stop Scarletts Ireland adventures land her in a heap of trouble from which only Rhett can save her but this TV miniseries wisely keeps the focus on these captivating characters their entangled histories and the collective destiny that refuses to part them The show also looks good the location scenes in Ireland are particularly handsome and there is something unaccountably satisfying about seeing Scarlett and Rhett walking through peaceful green hills Enjoy --Tom Keogh Shadowlands (1993) [VHS] Hbo Home Video [VHS] 20th Century Fox Mikhail Baryshnikov made his film debut in this lightweight but entertaining drama about the relationship between a renowned ballerina Anne Bancroft and the woman Shirley MacLaine who had trained with her but had given up dance to become a wife mother and teacher Between MacLaines envy over her friends career and the attention her own ballerina daughter Leslie Browne is getting MacLaines character goes through a complicated crisis The two actresses carry the story very well and probably camouflage its thinness they even make a somewhat condescending climax involving a catfight seem like a good idea A subplot involving a developing romance between the virginal Browne and Baryshnikovs womanizer makes for pretty window dressing More memorable are dance sequences featuring each in splendid performance Baryshnikovs leaps are something to behold --Tom Keogh Anne of Avonlea [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Walt Disney Video This video is the sequel to the
