A Town Like Alice [VHS] Starmaker Entertainment Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Groundbreaking on several counts not the least of which was an innovative use of animation and stereophonic sound this ambitious Disney feature has lost nothing to time since its release in 1940 Classical music was interpreted by Disney animators resulting in surreal fantasy and playful escapism Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra provided the music for eight segments by the composers Tchaikovsky Moussorgsky Stravinsky Beethoven Ponchielli Bach Dukas and Schubert Not all the sequences were created equally but a few are simply glorious such as Night on Bald Mountain The Sorcerers Apprentice and The Nutcracker Suite The animation ranges from subtly delicate to fiercely bold The screen bursts with color and action as creatures transmute and convention is thrust aside The painstaking detail and saturated hues are unique to this film unmatched even by more advanced technology --Rochelle OGorman Scarlett (Special Collector's Editon) [VHS] Hallmark This soapy but highly watchable television sequel to Gone with the Wind the most popular Hollywood movie ever made has nothing to do with memories of a vanished antebellum South But it does end up in Ireland where the determined Scarlett OHara Butler played with frosty passion by Joanne Whalley-Kilmer turns hard times into an opportunity by buying the ancestral home of her family Before that happens however Scarlett fights to win back the estranged Rhett Butler manfully portrayed by Timothy Dalton often seen in the company of other women struggles for control over the homestead Tara and gets caught in yet another compromising position with poor Ashley Wilkes Stephen Collins The troubles never stop Scarletts Ireland adventures land her in a heap of trouble from which only Rhett can save her but this TV miniseries wisely keeps the focus on these captivating characters their entangled histories and the collective destiny that refuses to part them The show also looks good the location scenes in Ireland are particularly handsome and there is something unaccountably satisfying about seeing Scarlett and Rhett walking through peaceful green hills Enjoy --Tom Keogh Sarah Plain And Tall [VHS] Republic Pictures The most-watched made-for-television movie of the 1990s 50 million viewers upon first broadcast in 1991 this fine adaptation of Patricia MacLachlans novel stars Glenn Close as Sarah a Maine schoolteacher who responds to a Kansas farmers newspaper ad seeking a bride Set in 1910 the story follows Sarahs trial run as stepmother to the children of the widowed Jacob Witting Christopher Walken The tough part of the experiment is the conflicting expectations the would-be couple have over Sarahs role in the household The kids too have their doubts about a substitute for their mother and Jacob isnt ready emotionally for a new beginning But in short order the strong-willed Sarah brings happiness and vitality into the house and love and understanding eventually blossom between the two lonely adults Everything is right about this Hallmark production from a bright script cowritten by MacLachlan to Glenn Jordans sensitive direction and a pair of first-rate leads making every moment worth watching A wholesome tale from the heartland this is a good movie for any viewing situation from an audience of one to an entire family --Tom Keogh Gone with the Wind [VHS] MGM MGM (Video & DVD) David O Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to besomehow more than a movie a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold and in some respects he fell far short of the goal While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic the second is ramshackle and arbitrary But theres no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction color sound cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic As for Clark Gable were talking one of the most vital masculine performances ever committed to film --Tom Keogh Stone Fox [VHS] Republic Pictures Odyssey [VHS] Hallmark Entertainment Andrei Konchalovskys expansive television mini-series production of Homers epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus strikingly played by Armand Assante and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home this film turns into a fantastical adventure Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe Bernadette Peters to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus Eric Roberts Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide the goddess Athena with Greta Scacchi as Odysseuss faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin Jeroen Krabb Christopher Lee and Irene Papas The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean making for a lush lovely visual experience --Sean Axmaker Love Letter (1998) [VHS] Hallmark No one with romantic tendencies will be able to resist The Love Letter Campbell Scott plays a Civil War buff who buys a desk from that era While polishing it he discovers a secret compartment in which sits an unmailed letter--a letter written by a young woman named Lizzie Jennifer Jason Leigh over a century earlier Touched by her yearning for passion he writes her back egged on by his mystically inclined mother Estelle Parsons Magically his letter reaches Lizzie and they begin a correspondence that threatens Scotts impending marriage but promises to bring fulfilment to Lizzie The Love Letter is absurd yet somehow that doesnt stop it from being completely engaging and even moving Scott and Parsons are solid while Jason Leigh is downright rapturous--the movie may owe its success to her The plot has surprising twists and the conclusion is sweet and satisfying An unexpected pleasure --Bret Fetzer Back Street [VHS] Universal Studios Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas [VHS] Walt Disney Video/Touchstone Home Video For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured well here it is The full title is Tim Burtons The Nightmare Before Christmas which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/ fantasy/ horror/ comedy It is based on characters created by Burton the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wees Big Adventure Beetlejuice Edward Scissorhands and the first two Batman movies His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington voice by Danny Elfman who also wrote the songs who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called Christmastown Directed by Henry Selick who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch As Roger Ebert noted in his review some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up it has the kind of offbeat subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen --Jim Emerson
