Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right thanks to some memorable tunes including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and the title song and some endearingly cute comic relief We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply wont have it this uppity Cinderella thinking shes going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart but perseverance animal buddies and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout Its a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business particularly Cinderellas rodent pals dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer Theres also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke Its a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying --David Kronke Beauty and the Beast (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Disneys Classic The film that officially signaled Disneys animation renaissance following The Little Mermaid and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured It relates the story of Belle a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father when he inadvertently offends the Beast a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself Belle boldly takes her fathers place imprisoned in the Beasts gloomy mansion Naturally Belle teaches the Beast to love What makes this such a dazzler besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters the Beasts mansion is overrun by quipping dancing household items is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late lamented lyricist Howard Ashman The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar and Menkens score scored a trophy as well The downright funniest song is Gaston a louts paean to himself including the immortal line I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting Be Our Guest is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage Since Ashmans passing animated musicals havent quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit sophistication and pure joy --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video One of the brightest nuggets from Disneys golden age this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world with scores of major and minor characters including fauna and fowl each with a distinct identity When you watch Snow Whites intricate graceful movements of fingers arms and head all in one shot it is not the technical brilliance of Disneys artists that leaps out at you but the very spirit of her engaging girl-woman character When the wicked queens poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it Based on the Grimm fairy tale Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal in mythic terms with the psychological foundation for growing up Its a crowning achievement and should not be missed --Tom Keogh The Little Mermaid (Fully Restored Special Edition) (Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Disney Walt Disney Home Video From the moment that Prince Erics ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow suddenly recaptured that magic that had been dormant for thirty years In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to spend a day warm on the sand Ariel trades her voice to Ursula the Sea Witch classically voiced by Pat Carroll for a pair of legs Ariel can only succeed if she receives true loves kiss in a few days time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian a loudmouth seagull and a flounder The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form witty and relevant and they advance the story go on hum a few bars of Under the Sea Mermaid put animation back on the studios to do list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters A modern Disney classic --Keith Simanton Fans awaiting a revamp of The Little Mermaid on DVD should be pleased to know that the new fully restored version gets the treatment it deserved all along The Special Edition is presented in 1 78 aspect ratio as opposed to the original 1 66 presentation and gone is the grainy original transfer which had Ariels mottled complexion looking like she spent some time in a tanning bed Various crew members chime in on the audio commentary track but most dominant is composer Alan Menken who adds in previously taped interviews with the late lyricist Howard Ashman a welcome surprise Theres also a 45-minute making of documentary in which everyone from animators to Jeffrey Katzenberg and Leonard Maltin reflect the limp state of Disney animation before Mermaid kicked off its golden reign of the early 90s Another revelation Katzenberg nearly eliminated Part of Your World from the movie after a hyperactive kid sitting in front of him appeared restless during a test screening Other features a documentary on Hans Christian Andersen and the tragedy of his personal life that inspired his much darker original ending The mermaid unable to stab the prince in the heart after he marries another turns into sea foam Included is an animated short of Andersens The Little Match Girl a tale so depressing--again reflecting the loneliness in Andersens own life--its not really clear how it ever became a beloved bedtime story Theres also a sing-along feature which jumps right to the musical numbers with words appearing onscreen Deleted scenes include one unused song Silence is Golden and various early sketches of alternate takes One curious addition is a virtual Little Mermaid amusement park ride which was originally proposed for Disneyland but failed to come to life Seems digitizing the experience for people to ride in their living room was the consolation prize The only blasphemous feature is a music video of Kiss the Girls reimagined as a Hilary Duff-esque rock song-- minus the charming calypso beat that made it famous --sung by the Hilary Duff-esque Ashley Tisdale High School Musical Aside from that if you own The Little Mermaid in its 1999 incarnation of DVD get the special edition and leave your old one for the kids or the dog to scratch up -- Ellen A Kim / em r / r / r / r / r / span class h1 Stills The African Queen [VHS] CBS/Fox VIdeo The 1951 John Huston classic set in Africa during World War I garnered Humphrey Bogart an Oscar for his role as a hard-drinking riverboat captain in Africa who provides passage for a Christian missionary spinster Katharine Hepburn Taking an instant mutual dislike to one another the two endure rough waters the presence of German soldiers and their own bickering to finally fall into one anothers arms This is classic Huston material--part adventure part quest--but this time with a pair of characters whod all but given up on happiness Bogart a longtime collaborator with Huston on such classics as The Maltese Falcon and Key Largo and Hepburn have never been better and support from frequent Huston crony Robert Morley Beat the Devil also featuring Bogart adds some extra dimension and color --Tom Keogh A Town Like Alice [VHS] Starmaker Entertainment Mouse on the Mayflower [VHS] Vision Video Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Groundbreaking on several counts not the least of which was an innovative use of animation and stereophonic sound this ambitious Disney feature has lost nothing to time since its release in 1940 Classical music was interpreted by Disney animators resulting in surreal fantasy and playful escapism Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra provided the music for eight segments by the composers Tchaikovsky Moussorgsky Stravinsky Beethoven Ponchielli Bach Dukas and Schubert Not all the sequences were created equally but a few are simply glorious such as Night on Bald Mountain The Sorcerers Apprentice and The Nutcracker Suite The animation ranges from subtly delicate to fiercely bold The screen bursts with color and action as creatures transmute and convention is thrust aside The painstaking detail and saturated hues are unique to this film unmatched even by more advanced technology --Rochelle OGorman A Charlie Brown Christmas [VHS] Paramount This television classic features the Peanuts characters in the story of Charlie Browns problematic efforts to mount a school Christmas pageant Everybodys on board Lucy Snoopy Schroeder Pig-Pen but the biggest impression is surely made by Linus who stops the show with his recitation from the gospels of the story of Christs birth --Tom Keogh Legend of Sleepy Hollow [VHS] Walt Disney Video
