The Little Mermaid (Fully Restored Special Edition) (Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Disney Walt Disney Home Video miss classified should be Used Acceptable From the moment that Prince Erics ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow suddenly recaptured that magic that had been dormant for thirty years In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to spend a day warm on the sand Ariel trades her voice to Ursula the Sea Witch classically voiced by Pat Carroll for a pair of legs Ariel can only succeed if she receives true loves kiss in a few days time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian a loudmouth seagull and a flounder The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form witty and relevant and they advance the story go on hum a few bars of Under the Sea Mermaid put animation back on the studios to do list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters A modern Disney classic --Keith Simanton Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video This is a GREAT movie and will love Disneys adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right thanks to some memorable tunes including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and the title song and some endearingly cute comic relief We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply wont have it this uppity Cinderella thinking shes going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart but perseverance animal buddies and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout Its a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business particularly Cinderellas rodent pals dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer Theres also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke Its a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying --David Kronke The Lion King (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video The Lion King one of Disneys masterpiece movies comes in plastic protective case case and tape look and plays very good Not an ideal choice for younger kids this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production The story finds a lion cub son of a king sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle The little hero finds his way into the circle of life with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place Characters are very strong vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific the jokes are aimed as much if not more at adults than kids the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features But be cautious this is too intense for the Rugrat crowd --Tom Keogh Toy Story [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video There is greatness in film that can be discussed dissected and talked about late into the night Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed and nary a word needs to be spoken This kind of entertainment is what they used to call movie magic and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second much like another film innovator Walt Disney r / r / Lasseters story is universal and magical what do toys do when theyre not played with Cowboy Woody voiced by Tom Hanks Andys favorite bedroom toy tries to calm the other toys some original some classic during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party when newer toys may replace them Sure enough Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen is the new toy that takes over the throne Buzz has a crucial flaw though--he believes hes the real Buzz Lightyear not a toy Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting including Don Rickles as Mr Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur The director-animator won a special Oscar for the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film In other words the movie is great em --Doug Thomas / em Toy Story 2 [VHS] Disney/Pixar A landmark in filmmaking with cutting-edge animation and the voice talents of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen TOY STORY introduced Woody the Cowboy and Buzz Lightyear a space age action figure Along with a supporting cast of funny friends TOY STORY will entertain the entire family with action adventure and sidesplitting laughs Joining the original voice cast in TOY STORY 2 is a roundup of unforgettable new characters including Jessie the Cowgirl and Stinky Pete the prospector Winner of the Golden Globe R award for Best Picture this box office smash is full of laugh-out-loud humor wonderful music and eye-popping animation John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages Like the few great movie sequels Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here as we find out Woody voiced by Tom Hanks is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular 60s childrens show When a greedy collector takes Woody Buzz Lightyear Tim Allen launches a rescue mission with Andys other toys To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since well the first Toy Story Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature Pixar shows how much technology has advanced the human characters look more human backgrounds are superior and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling And its a hoot for kids and adults The film is packed with spoofs easily accessible in-jokes and inspired voice casting with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates the filmmakers are storytellers first Woodys heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U S two other outstanding 1999 animated features The Iron Giant Princess Mononoke could not it became a huge box-office hit --Doug Thomas Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video WALT DISNEYS MASTERPIECE Along with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 the anthology set contains a third disc that examines a segment of both movies in detail Each segment has an introduction that has experts including Leonard Maltin producer Roy E Disney or the animators setting up the pieces history Notes on the music and dozens of design photos are included on all the segments although others offer more intriguing features Abandoned animation is shown on many segments as are a few behind-the-scenes shorts the most intriguing are experts from Walt Disneys hosted documentaries on how his company made movies As for the photos they are awkwardly catalogued and only the most patient of viewers would want to look at all of them In some segments though these images are entertainingly produced as a story reel presenting these images--rough animation sketches pastel paintings--with the musical accompaniment For those looking for a more well-rounded view of the films the two one-hour documentaries on each films disc lay the groundwork but none of the anthology looks at how the first film was seen through the years or gives time to anyone who wasnt gung-ho about every element of the films There is hardly a mention of embarrassing stereotypes that were matted and still are out of the Pastoral segment or the intriguing aspect of the film as a 60s icon for the ultimate head-trip Disney does let their guard down to show sequences that were being readied in 1940 for future editions including a recently restored short scored to Clair de Lune Most tantalizing is a look at how the special effects were done in the original film The guide is a scrapbook that one of the technicians kept and was discovered only in 1990 Fans can only hope a reproduction will be made available someday --Doug Thomas Peter Pan (Fully Restored 45th Anniversary Limited Edition) (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) [VHS] Walt Disney Walt Disney Home Video Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animated Disney films it instills an element of childlike wonder The 1953 version of James M Barries story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book Barries wondrous focus on childs play is the key to its longevity kids who dont grow up shadows that run away from their owners pirates a fairy and the magic ability to fly In short you cant help wishing the adventure would happen to you Fueled by a few memorable songs the stunner being You Can Fly and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook Disneys version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade Unlike some classics Peter Pan never ages along the way --Doug Thomas La Crosse Technology Weather Direct the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured It relates the story of Belle a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father when he inadvertently offends the Beast a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself Belle boldly takes her fathers place imprisoned in the Beasts gloomy mansion Naturally Belle teaches the Beast to love What makes this such a dazzler besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters the Beasts mansion is overrun by quipping dancing household items is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late lamented lyricist Howard Ashman The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar and Menkens score scored a trophy as well The downright funniest song is Gaston a louts paean to himself including the immortal line I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting Be Our Guest is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage Since Ashmans passing animated musicals havent quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit sophistication and pure joy --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title To Kill a Mockingbird (Widescreen) [VHS] Universal Studios Ranked 34 on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 Greatest American Films To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-oriented dramas ever made A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee the film retains a timeless quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter racism in the Depression-era South and remains powerfully resonant in present-day America with its advocacy of tolerance justice integrity and loving responsible parenthood Its tempting to call this an important message movie that should be required viewing for children and adults alike but this riveting courtroom drama is anything but stodgy or pedantic As Atticus Finch the small-town Alabama lawyer and widower father of two Gregory Peck gives one of his finest performances with his impassioned defense of a black man Brock Peters wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman While his children Scout Mary Badham and Jem Philip Alford learn the realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred they also learn to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley Robert Duvall in his brilliant almost completely nonverbal screen debut What emerges from this evocative exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of Harper Lees enduring novel a showcase for some of the finest American acting ever assembled in one film and a rare quality of humanitarian artistry including Horton Footes splendid screenplay and Elmer Bernsteins outstanding score that seems all but lost in the chaotic morass of modern cinema --Jeff Shannon
