The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video This video is the original Walt Disneys Junglebook Disneys 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling the film goes its own way as Disney animation will but the strong characters and smart casting George Sanders as the villainous tiger Shere Khan make it one of the studios stronger feature-length cartoons Songs include The Bare Necessities and Trust in Me --Tom Keogh Last of the Dogmen [VHS] Hbo Home Video Modern bounty hunter Lewis Gates is hired to track down three dangerous fugitives who have escaped into the Montana wilderness When the fugitives are found murdered Gates has a mystery on his hands Accompanied by anthropologist Lillian Sloane Gates ventures further into the mountains and discovers an isolated settlement inhabited by a Native American tribe thought to have been wiped out by white settlers a century earlier The two gradually begin to gain acceptance within the tribe but when Gates vengeful ex father-in-law Sheriff Deegan leads a posse into the mountains Gates and Sloane must prevent the tribe from being massacred a second time Written by Ronos Despite an irritating tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story it wasnt Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist Barbara Hershey search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films As in Kevin Costners Oscar-winning movie however there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning mystery and loss --Tom Keogh 101 Dalmatians (Walt Disney's Classic) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video Full of boundless adventure and boisterous fun Disneys 17th animated masterpiece is the original film classic starring 101 of the worlds most lovable huggable Dalmatians and their hilariously evil captor Cruella De Vil A charming London neighborhood is home to Roger and Anita whose beloved Dalmatians Pongo and Perdita have become the proud parents of 15 puppies But when Cruella and her bumbling henchmen Horace and Jasper unexpectedly appear the pups soon disappear -- along with every other Dalmatian puppy in town Now Pongo and Perdita must rally their animal friends and use the power of the Twilight Bark to find Cruellas secret hideaway and free the puppies Featuring the unforgettable toe-tapping song Cruella De Vil 101 DALMATIANS is one of the most cherished and sought-after Disney classics of all time -- and among the last films to bear the personal touch of Walt Disney Back in 1961 Walt Disney got a little hip with 101 Dalmatians making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular The result is a kitschy change in animation and story Pongo and Perdita are two lonely dalmatians who meet cute in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family They become proud parents of 15 pups who are stolen by the dastardly Cruella De Vil who wants to make a fur coat out of them Cruella has become the most popular villain in all of Disney shes flamboyantly nasty and lots of fun But its the dalmatians who shine in this endearing classic particularly those precocious pups Telling the story from the dogs point of view is a clever conceit a fundamental flaw of the live-action remake --Bill Desowitz Tarzan (Walt Disney) [VHS] Disney Walt Disney Home Video Wild with exotic adventure and laughs Disneys TARZAN R is a magnificent adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs classic story of the ape man Raised by a family of gorillas including the loving Kala and the wisecracking Terk Tarzan develops all the instincts and prowess of a jungle animal But with the sudden appearance of Tarzans own kind including the beautiful Jane two very different worlds are about to become one Driven by five powerful songs from pop superstar Phil Collins and starring the voice talents of Minnie Driver Glenn Close and Rosie ODonnell Disneys TARZAN delivers incredible adventure as well as important reminders about acceptance and family After viewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote to Walt Disney about adapting his novel of an ape-man into a feature animated cartoon Sixtysome years later the tale is finally told with brilliant design work that looks unlike any previous animated film The story is a natural for Disney since the themes of misunderstood central figures have been at the heart of its recent hits Disneys Tarzan doesnt wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa What gives the film its zing is its clever use of music the songs are sung by Phil Collins himself rather than onscreen characters and the remarkable animation Deep Canvas a 3-D technology was developed for the film creating a jungle that comes alive as Tarzan swings through the trees often looking like a modern skateboarder racing down giant tree limbs The usual foray of sidekicks including a rambunctious ape voiced by Rosie ODonnell should keep the little ones aptly entertained The two lead voices Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane are inspired choices Their chemistry helps the story through the weakest points the last third and makes Tarzans initial connection with all things human including Jane delicious entertainment Disney still is not taking risks in its animated films but as cookie-cutter entertainment Tarzan makes a pretty good treat Ages 5 and up --Doug Thomas Robin Hood (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Walt Disney Home Video A minor classic from Disney this 1973 all-animal all-animated musical version of the familiar story is more charming than one might expect Perhaps its the warm chummy take on key relationships within the legend--the way Robin Hood Brian Bedford gets twitterpated whenever the subject of Maid Marian Monica Evans comes up or the way best pal Little John Phil Harris voicing a variation on his own Baloo from The Jungle Book admonishes the Sherwood Forest hero Aw Rob why dontcha just marry the girl Then of course theres the canny casting of the romantic leads as foxes Robin the sly one and Marian the well foxy one The rest of the vocal cast is lively and eclectic Peter Ustinov Andy Devine Terry-Thomas George Lindsey Roger Miller provides the songs and voice for the minstrel character Allan-A-Dale The film is ably directed by Wolfgang Reitherman whose decades of work in Disneys animation division helped create the studios rich legacy --Tom Keogh High Road to China [VHS] Warner Home Video Naughty Marietta [VHS] MGM (Warner) The Competition [VHS] Sony Pictures When you are in the mood for a pleasant little romance this should fit the bill Amy Irving and Richard Dreyfuss are young pianists vying for the same prize Surprise surprise they fall in love We then must wait with nearly breathless anticipation to see if she will throw the contest to ensure his love It is all a bit starry-eyed but not overly gooey The concert footage is handled with class and there are some fine supporting performances from Sam Wanamaker and Lee Remick It is also a lot of fun to see Dreyfuss and Irving as such fresh-faced innocents --Rochelle OGorman The Adventures of Indiana Jones [VHS] Paramount Set Includes R Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark R Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom R Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade R Indiana Jones and the Treasure of the Peacocks Eye As with Star Wars the George Lucas-produced Indiana Jones trilogy was not just a plaything for kids but an act of nostalgic affection toward a lost phenomenon the cliffhanging movie serials of the past Episodic in structure and with fate hanging in the balance about every 10 minutes the Jones features tapped into Lucass extremely profitable Star Wars formula of modernizing the look and feel of an old but popular story model Steven Spielberg directed all three films which are set in the late 1930s and early 40s the comic book-like Raiders of the Lost Ark the spooky Gunga Din -inspired Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and the cautious but entertaining Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Fans and critics disagree over the order of preference some even finding the middle movie nearly repugnant in its violence Pro- Temple of Doom people on the other hand believe that film to be the most disarmingly creative and emotionally effective of the trio One things for sure Harrison Fords swaggering two-fisted self-effacing performance worked like a charm and the art of cracking bullwhips was probably never quite the iconic activity it soon became after Raiders Supporting players and costars were very much a part of the series too--Karen Allen Sean Connery as Indys dad Kate Capshaw Ke Huy Quan Amrish Puri Denholm Elliot River Phoenix and John Rhys-Davies among them Years have passed since the last film another is supposedly in the works but emerging film buffs can have the same fun their predecessors did picking out numerous references to Hollywood classics and B-movies of the past --Tom Keogh The African Queen [VHS] CBS/Fox VIdeo One of Bogeys best movie If you are a Bogey fan then you want this movie for your collection John Huston made better more powerful films than The African Queen but none so universally beloved on first appearance and over the decades since In this adaptation of the C S Forester novel Humphrey Bogart who would win the best-actor Oscar and Katharine Hepburn costar as an unlikely pair thrown together in German East Africa during the First World War Hes the gin-soaked skipper of what we might call the title character a none-too-reliable steam launch chugging along the backwaters of the Dark Continent Hepburns a straitlaced Methodist missionary who following the demise of her bachelor brother Robert Morley and the burning of their village by Kaiser Wilhelms troops determines that the Queen should be used to attack the K nigin Luise a large German gunboat patrolling a lake downriver Its an absurd proposition Then again John Huston and the absurd were always on familiar terms It wasnt until he got to the Congo that the director realized what a funny picture The African Queen was going to be thanks to the odd coupling of Bogie and Kate One brought out a vein of humor in the other and this comic sense which had been missing from the book and screenplay grew out of our day-to-day shooting Within the gunwales of a not-very-large boat Huston managed to devise myriad ways to keep his two leading characters on separate visual planes even as circumstance and tender emotional urgency conspired to push them together This was Hustons first feature film in Technicolor and the peerless Jack Cardiff The Red Shoes was there to shoot it Unfortunately neither of them could do anything about the process-screen technology needed for and glaringly inadequate to the sequence of Bogart and Hepburn shooting the rapids--just about the only lapse in an enchanting fairy tale for adults The script is credited to Huston and James Agee the uncredited Peter Viertel summoned to the African locations to write some additional material would later fictionalize the experience as White Hunter Black Heart a savage roman clef --Richard T Jameson
