The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Music Box Films Home Entertainment Forty years ago Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan Her body was never found yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist Michael Nyqvist and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander Noomi Rapace to investigate When the pair link Harriet s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history But the Vanger s are a secretive clan and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves Fans of Stieg Larssons Men Who Hate Women may have been concerned about how the Swedish authors novel would translate to the screen but they neednt have investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist Michael Nyqvist has just been convicted of a bogus charge of libel against a rich and corrupt corporate hotshot when hes unexpectedly offered a most unusual gig An aging captain of industry named Henrik Vanger Sven-Bertil Taube wants Blomkvist to figure out what happened to Vangers niece who disappeared more than 40 years earlier not only is the old man convinced that she was murdered but he suspects that another member of his large and rather disagreeable family which includes several former Nazis is the culprit Blomkvist takes the job which includes spending at least six months on Vangers isolated island in the middle of winter But what he doesnt know is that hes being spied on by twentysomething Lisbeth Salander brilliantly played by Noomi Rapace in a career-making performance the titular Girl and the possessor of remarkable skills as a sleuth and computer hacker With her gothlike piercings and all-black clothes Lisbeth is a vivid character to say the least While we dont exactly know the details of her dark past its obviously still with her indeed shes just been assigned a new guardian like a parole officer to look after her finances and other matters We also know that she is not someone to mess with when the guardian turns out to be a thoroughly vile monster Lisbeth gets back at him in one of the more satisfying revenge sequences in recent memory That Lisbeth and Mikael should end up working together and more isnt especially surprising But the horrifying details and depths of depravity they uncover while working on the case parallels to The Silence of the Lambs are facile but appropriate definitely are and Opley does a nice job of keeping it all straight At more than two and a half hours the film is long with its share of grim graphic and scary moments but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a winner --Sam Graham The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [Blu-ray] Music Box Films Forty years ago Harriet Vanger shipboard computer A dazzling journey that tops them all -- and showed the way for other effects-packed films that followed When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C Clarke to collaborate on the proverbial intelligent science fiction film its a safe bet neither the maverick auteur nor the great science fiction writer knew they would virtually redefine the parameters of the cinema experience A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarkes short story The Sentinel 2001 is a visual tone poem barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film that charts a phenomenal history of human evolution From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools in the films opening sequence to the journey of the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth of the star child at films end Kubricks vision is meticulous and precise In keeping with the directors underlying theme of dehumanization by technology the notorious seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality than the human astronauts it supposedly is serving The director also leaves the meaning of the black rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion This theme in part is what makes 2001 a film like no other though dated now that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic compared to reality Still the film is timelessly provocative in its pioneering exploration of inner- and outer-space consciousness With spectacular painstakingly authentic special effects that have stood the test of time Kubricks film is nothing less than a cinematic milestone--puzzling provocative and perfect --Jeff Shannon Ip Man (Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] WELL GO USA INC Well Go USA Ip Man Collectors Edition containing over 2 hours of bonus footage is an award winning who would later become instructor and mentor to Bruce Lee Fans of Ronny Yus Fearless with Jet Li will notice several similarities between the biopics--like Lis Huo Yuanjia Ip Man is a tireless instructor whose life largely consisting of training and jaw-dropping spar sessions with any and all is thrown into chaos with the arrival of Japanese military forces in 1937 He soon draws the interest of the commanding Japanese colonel Hiroyuki Ikeuchi who exploits the starving locals by forcing them against his trainees for bags of rice Ip must then pit his extraordinary Wing Chun against the colonels karate for his own dignity as well as the soul of his people Were Yips film simply a series of set pieces featuring Yens incredible fighting skills Ip Man would rank among the best martial arts films of the past three decades the fight choreography by Hong Kong legend Sammo Hung and Tony Leung Siu-hung with consultation by Ips own son Ip Chun offers the same sort of eye-popping rewind-required fist and footwork that Ips disciple Bruce Lee inspired in the 70s and Jackie Chan Jet Li and Tony Jaa displayed in subsequent years a battle between Ip and 10 black belts in particular requires multiple views to absorb the speed and deftness on display But Ip Man also succeeds as a historical drama inspired by the harsh realities of the Japanese occupation of mainland China as well as an acting showcase for Yen who embodies Ips formidable physical and emotional strengths The American DVD release of Ip Man from Well Go offers many of the same extras found on the Region 2 UK presentation including interviews with Yen Yip Hung and most of the cast plus deleted scenes an impressive tour of production designer Kenneth Maks sets and location work and several brief making-of featurettes --Paul Gaita Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon [Blu-ray] Sony Pictures Classics Hong Kong wuxia films or martial arts fantasies traditionally squeeze poor acting slapstick humor and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can literally fly Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon has no shortage of breathtaking battles but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance This is the work of director Ang Lee who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a youngster and made Crouching Tiger as a tribute to the form To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal Lee did two important things First he assembled an all-star lineup of talent joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi Behind the scenes Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau The Killer The Bride with White Hair and legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping best known outside Asia for his work on The Matrix Second in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as The Green Destiny but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation In his hands the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other The filming required an immense effort from all involved Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic lyrical feel The astonishing battles between Jen Zhang and Yu Shu Lien Yeoh on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai Chow atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work which in turn required meticulous digital wire removal But the result is a seamless blend of action romance and social commentary in a populist film that like its young star Zhang soars with balletic grace and dignity --Eugene Wei Léon: The Professional (Theatrical and Extended Edition) [Blu-ray] Son Sony Pictures Jean Reno Gary Oldman Natalie Portman and Danny Aiello star in Leon The Professional a go-for-broke thriller about a professional assassin whose work becomes dangerously personal Calling himself a cleaner the mysterious Leon Reno is New Yorks top hitman When his next-door neighbors are murdered Leon becomes the unwilling guardian of the familys sole survivor - 12-year-old Mathilda Natalie Portman but Mathilda doesnt just want protection she wants revenge Training her in the deadly tricks of his trade Leon helps her track the psychotic agent Oldman who murdered her family Luc Besson The Fifth Element made his American directorial debut with this stylized thriller about an Italian hit man Jean Reno who takes in an American girl Natalie Portman being pursued by a corrupt killer cop Gary Oldman Oldman is a little more unhinged than he should be but there is something genuinely irresistible about the story line and the relationship between Reno and Portman Rather than cave in to the cookie-cutter look and feel of American action pictures Besson brings a bit of his glossy style from French hits La Femme Nikita and Subway to the production and the results are refreshing even if the bullets and explosions are awfully familiar --Tom Keogh Chloe [Blu-ray] SONY PICTURES HOME ENT Sony Pictures Classics A missed flight a lack of intimacy guarded secrets To Catherine Julianne Moore every detail
