Next-door neighbors since first grade they start as rivals she flabbergasts the boy by outplaying him in a game of driveway pickup and age into best friends and lovers The romantic complications follow a familiar game plan but the film throws a fascinating spotlight onto the contrast between mens and womens basketball While Quincy plays college ball on huge courts to cheering sold-out crowds we see Monicas sweat tears and sheer physical dedication in front of tiny audiences in small gyms and second-rate auditoriums The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s years before the establishment of the WNBA so Monicas prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe while Quincy steps into the pros at home Its a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal she had never played ball before the film but youd never tell from her performance Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincys and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp savvy contrast Alfre Woodard costars as Monicas harping mom always trying to get her to be more ladylike and Dennis Haysbert is Quincys philandering father Hoops fan 1992s Best Actor and other talents vividly portray the life and times of the visionary leader One of the decades best and most important films Arch Campbell WRC-TV/ Washington D C One of the most charismatic and politically controversial voices in history Malcolm X burst into the public FEARED AND REVERED MALCOM X CRYSTALLIZED THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF BLACKS DEMANDING HUMAN RIGHTS FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS DURING THE RACIALLY TUMULTUOUS AND DIVISIVE DECADES OF THIS 1950S AND 60S UNTIL HIS 1965 ASSASSINATION IN NEW YORK AT THE AGE OF THIRTY NINE Just as Do the Right Thing was the capstone of Spike Lees earlier career Malcolm X marked the next milestone in the filmmakers artistic maturity It seemed everything Lee had done up to that point was to prepare him for this epic biography of Americas fiery civil-rights leader who is superbly played by Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington from his early days as a zoot-suited hustler known as Detroit Red to his spiritual maturity after his pilgrimage to Mecca as a Black Muslim by the name of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz Do the Right Thing climaxed with the photographic images of Malcolm X and Dr Martin Luther King engulfed by flames of rage Malcolm X explores the genesis and evolution of that rage over Malcolms lifetime and how these two great figures--held up to the public as polar-opposites within the African American human rights movement King for nonviolent civil disobedience Malcolm for achieving equality by any means necessary --were each essential to the agenda of the other Lee careens from the hedonistic ebullience of Malcolms early days to the stark despair of prison from his life-changing conversion to Islam to his emergence as a dynamic political leader--all with an epic sweep and vitality that illuminates personal details as well as political ideology Angela Bassett is also terrific as Malcolms wife Betty Shabazz --Jim Emerson Glory Sony Sony Pictures Broderick and Elwes are the idealistic young Bostonians who lead the regiment Freeman is the inspirational sergeant who united the troops and Denzel Washington is the runaway slave who embodies the indomitable spirit of the 54th regiment of massachusetts One of the finest films ever made about the American Civil War Glory also has the honor of being the first major Hollywood film to acknowledge the vital contribution of African American soldiers to the countrys historic struggle Based on the books Lay This Laurel by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard and the wartime letters of Robert Gould Shaw the film tells the story of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry an all-black unit comprising Northern freemen and escaped slaves Under the command of Shaw played by Matthew Broderick the 54th served admirably in battle until they made their ultimate demonstration of bravery during the almost suicidal assault on the Confederate Fort Wagner in Charleston South Carolina on July 18 1863 Glory achieves its powerful impact by meticulously setting up the terrible conditions under which these neglected soldiers fought and by illuminating the tenacity of the human spirit from the oppression of slavery to the hard-won recognition of battlefield heroism Although Denzel Washington deservedly won an Oscar for his supporting role as a runaway-slave-turned-soldier Glory faced some tough competition at the 1989 Academy Awards against popular hits like Driving Miss Daisy and Dead Poets Society and was shut out of nearly all the major categories Since then its been duly recognized by historians and critics as a classic film of its genre --Jeff Shannon A Mother's Prayer IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT MOTHERS PRAYER A DVD MOVIE em A Mothers Prayer / em starring Robin Givens Entertainment Quentin Tarantino presents the premiere of the JACKIE BROWN COLLECTORS SERIES DVD complete with your favorite award-winning movie all-star cast and never-before-seen footage What do a sexy stewardess Pam Grier a street-tough gun runner Samuel L Jackson a lonely bail bondsman Academy Award -nominee Robert Forster a shifty ex-con Robert DeNiro an earnest federal agent Michael Keaton and a stoned-out beach bunny Bridget Fonda have in common Theyre six players on the trail of a half million dollars in cash The only questions are whos getting played and whos gonna make the big score Combining an explosive mix of intense action and edgy humor Tarantino scores again with the entertaining JACKIE BROWN The curiosity of Quentin Tarantinos Jackie Brown is Robert Forsters worldly wise bail bondsman Max Cherry the most alive character in this adaptation of Elmore Leonards Rum Punch The Academy Awards saw it the same way giving Forster the films only nomination The film is more rum than punch and will certainly disappoint those who are looking for Tarantinos trademark style This movie is a slow decaffeinated story of six characters glued to a half million dollars brought illegally into the country The money belongs to Ordell Samuel L Jackson a gunrunner just bright enough to control his universe and do his own dirty work His just-paroled friend--a loose term with Ordell--Louis Robert De Niro is just taking up space and could be interested in the money However his loyalties are in question between his old partner and Ordells doped-up girl Bridget Fonda Certainly Fed Ray Nicolette Michael Keaton wants to arrest Ordell with the illegal money The key is the title character a late-40s-ish flight attendant Pam Grier who can pull her own weight and soon has both sides believing shes working for them The end result is rarely in doubt and what is left is two hours of Tarantinos expert dialogue as he moves his characters around town Tarantino changed the race of Jackie and Ordell a move that means little except that it allows Tarantino to heap on black culture and language something he has a gift and passion for He said this film is for an older audience although the language and drug use may put them off The film is not a salute to Griers blaxploitation films beyond the musical score Unexpectedly the most fascinating scenes are between Grier and Forster two neo-stars glowing in the limelight of their first major Hollywood film after decades of work --Doug Thomas The Pursuit of Happyness (Widescreen Edition) Sony Sony Pictures Will Smith stars in the inspirational true story of Chris Gardner a San Francisco salesman whos struggling to make ends meet When his girlfriend Linda Thandie Newton walks out Chris is left to raise their 5-year-old son Christopher Jaden Smith on his own Chris determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program where only one in twenty interns will make the cut But without a salary Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the street in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom With self- confidence and the love and trust of his son Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend A heartwarming film that demonstrates how good hard-working people can become homeless almost overnight Pursuit of Happyness is a tour-de-force showcase for Will Smith who convincingly portrays a down-and-out dad trying to better his familys life Smith who usually is cast in effortlessly boyish roles Men in Black Independence Day is wonderful in the film--even in the scenes that shamelessly tug at viewers heartstrings Based on the true-life story of Chris Gardner a San Francisco salesman forced at times to shelter his young son played by Smiths adorable look-alike offspring Jaden Smith in a mens room there is little suspense to the film in terms of Chris outcome His story and eventual success a successful and wealthy Chicago businessman was well-publicized on the newsmagazine show 20/ 20 And lets face it Hollywoods not too keen on making feel-good movies with unhappy endings The beauty and suspense to a certain extent of this film is in the way the story is told Though he is constantly rushing around to get to appointments and pick up his child things do not happen quickly for Chris When he accepts an internship with a prestigious stock brokerage firm theres a catch The position is unpaid suitable more for trust-fund children than single parents with no other source of income In many scenes the viewer panics along with Chris wondering how hes going to feed his child While Smith and his son Jaden share many tender moments together Thandie Newton has the thankless role of playing Chris shrill wife who deserts her family early in the film Its not a particularly challenging part for the talented actress and her departure doesnt impact the storyline much at all As for the movies misspelled title its inspired from a scene in the film Seeing a mural drawn by the children at a daycare center Chris points out to the proprietor that happiness is spelled incorrectly She notes that it doesnt matter how the word is written--just that the kids have it With Pursuit of Happyness Smith has come out of his safety zone and in turn ends up playing his most heroic role to date -- Jae-Ha Kim r span class h1 Extras from The Pursuit of Happyness / / span / r r border 0 cellpadding 4 Love Jones Warner Brothers New Line meets girl and boy loses girl--no more and no less than that--in this romantic story of young upwardly mobile African Americans navigating through Chicago club culture to the perilous shores of a black urbanites Larenz Tate and Nia Long are fine in the leads Tate makes a convincingly self-centered boy-man and director Theodore Witcher aims for his small target and hits it squarely --Tom Keogh The Tuskegee Airmen HBO HOME VIDEO Hbo Home Video Featuring an all-star cast headed by Laurence Fishburne fireballs of high speed air action explode off the screen in this exciting story of the Fighting 99th the first squadron of black American pilots to be allowed to fight for their country Based on the true story This true story of the black flyers who broke the color barrier in the U S Air Force during World War II is a well-intentioned film highlighted by an excellent cast Proud solemn Iowa-born Laurence Fishburne and city-kid hipster Cuba Gooding Jr are among the hopefuls who meet en route to Tuskegee Air Force Base where they are among the recruits for an experimental program to prove the abilities of the black man in the U S armed services Fighting prejudice from racist officers and government officials and held to a consistently higher level of performance than their white counterparts these men prove themselves in training and in combat many of them dying for their country in the process Andre Braugher costars as a West Point graduate who takes charge of the unit in Africa and in Italy where its christened the 332nd The film is rousing if slow starting and episodic but its periodically grounded by a host of war movie clich s notably the calculated demise of practically every trainee introduced in the opening scenes ironic given the 332nds real-life combat record--high casualties for the enemy low casualties among themselves and no losses among the bombers they escorted Ultimately the Emmy-nominated performances by moral backbone Fishburne and the dedicated Braugher and the energy and cocky confidence of Gooding give their battles both on and off the battlefield the sweet taste of victory --Sean Axmaker
