2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray] Warner Brothers Warner Home Video A space mission that could reveal mans destiny is jeopardized by a malfunctioning shipboard computer A dazzling journey that tops them all -- and showed the way for other effects-packed films that followed When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C Clarke to collaborate on the proverbial intelligent science fiction film its a safe bet neither the maverick auteur nor the great science fiction writer knew they would virtually redefine the parameters of the cinema experience A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarkes short story The Sentinel 2001 is a visual tone poem barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film that charts a phenomenal history of human evolution From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools in the films opening sequence to the journey of the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth of the star child at films end Kubricks vision is meticulous and precise In keeping with the directors underlying theme of dehumanization by technology the notorious seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality than the human astronauts it supposedly is serving The director also leaves the meaning of the black rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion This theme in part is what makes 2001 a film like no other though dated now that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic compared to reality Still the film is timelessly provocative in its pioneering exploration of inner- and outer-space consciousness With spectacular painstakingly authentic special effects that have stood the test of time Kubricks film is nothing less than a cinematic milestone--puzzling provocative and perfect --Jeff Shannon Thriller: Universal Studios When a Southern white woman accuses a black man of rape the outcome of the trial is a foregone conclusion and no lawyer except Atticus Finch will def Ranked 34 on the American Film Institutes list of the 100 Greatest American Films To Kill a Mockingbird is quite simply one of the finest family-oriented dramas ever made A beautiful and deeply affecting adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee the film retains a timeless quality that transcends its historically dated subject matter racism in the Depression-era South and remains powerfully resonant in present-day America with its advocacy of tolerance justice integrity and loving responsible parenthood Its tempting to call this an important message movie that should be required viewing for children and adults alike but this riveting courtroom drama is anything but stodgy or pedantic As Atticus Finch the small-town Alabama lawyer and widower father of two Gregory Peck gives one of his finest performances with his impassioned defense of a black man Brock Peters wrongfully accused of the rape and assault of a young white woman While his children Scout Mary Badham and Jem Philip Alford learn the realities of racial prejudice and irrational hatred they also learn to overcome their fear of the unknown as personified by their mysterious mostly unseen neighbor Boo Radley Robert Duvall in his brilliant almost completely nonverbal screen debut What emerges from this evocative exquisitely filmed drama is a pure distillation of the themes of Harper Lees enduring novel a showcase for some of the finest American acting ever assembled in one film and a rare quality of humanitarian artistry including Horton Footes splendid screenplay and Elmer Bernsteins outstanding score that seems all but the Disney version Prince Philip comes to her rescue much sooner r George Bruns orchestral score which was nominated for an Academy Award expertly blended famous themes from Tchaikovskys ballet r With a budget that exceeded 6 million in 1959 this was Walt Disneys most lavish and expensive animated feature to date r Determined to make the characters as realistic as possible Disney had a live action was the studios most ambitious to date a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky In the 14th century the malevolent Maleficent not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disneys Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday This of course would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love Things almost but not quite turn out that way thanks to the assistance of some bubbly bumbling fairies named Flora Fauna and Merryweather Its not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be anyway Instead those fairies carry the day as well as of course good Prince Phillip whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since See it in its original glory here And Malificents castle filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways manages a certain creepy grandeur -- David Kronke On the DVD / r Sleeping Beauty was the last and most lavish of Walt Disneys animated fairy tales He told the artists not to hurry and to give him a moving illustration The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look of Snow White and Pinocchio the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence However Sleeping Beauty suffers from a weak story the vision of an ageless princess slumbering in a vine-shrouded tower was replaced with elements of Snow White and a boy-meets-girl musical The evil Maleficent and the three Good Fairies Flora Fauna and Merryweather dominate the film rather than Princess Aurora and Prince Philip Sleeping Beauty was originally released in 70mm and the Blu-ray edition restores the film to its original splendor Many earlier releases trimmed the wide-screen images and/ or muted the glowing palatte The Bonus DVD looks good on a flat screen monitor but it pales in comparison to the richness of the Blu-ray In addition to the commentaries Mary Poppins (45th Anniversary Special Edition) WALT DISNEY VIDEO voyages to come Leslie Nielsen plays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to Planet Altair-4 home to Dr Morbius Walter Pidgeon his daughter Anne Francis a dutiful robot named Robby and to a mysterious terror Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeares The Tempest is one of the best most influential science fiction movies ever made Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek s Enterprise and the films robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make this movie as fresh imaginative and fun as it was when first released The Bridge on the River Kwai [Blu-ray] Sony Pictures Spectacularly produced and the winner of seven Academy Awards 1957 including Best Picture Best Director and Best Actor Alec Guinness The Bridge on the River Kwai continues to be one of the most memorable cinematic experiences of all time Now for the first time on Blu-ray following an extensive all-new 4K digital restoration from the original negative with newly restored 5 1 audio experience director David Leans masterpiece as you never have before r Director David Leans masterful 1957 realization of Pierre Boulles novel remains a benchmark for war films and a deeply absorbing movie by any standard--like most of Leans canon The Bridge on the River Kwai achieves a richness in theme narrative and characterization that transcends genre r r The story centers on a Japanese prison camp isolated deep in the jungles of Southeast Asia where the remorseless Colonel Saito Sessue Hayakawa has been charged with building a vitally important railway bridge His clash of wills with a British prisoner the charismatic Colonel Nicholson Alec Guinness escalates into a duel of honor Nicholson defying his captors demands to win concessions for his troops How the two officers reach a compromise and Nicholson becomes obsessed with building that bridge provides the storys thematic spine the parallel movement of a team of commandos dispatched to stop the project led by a British major Jack Hawkins and guided by an American escapee William Holden supplies the storys suspense and forward momentum r r Shot on location in Sri Lanka Kwai moves with a careful even deliberate pace that survivors of latter-day high-concept blockbusters might find lulling--Lean doesnt pander to attention deficit disorders with an explosion every 15 minutes Instead he guides us toward the intersection of the two plots accruing remarkable character details through extraordinary performances Hayakawas cruel camp commander is gradually revealed as a victim of his own sense of honor Holdens callow opportunist proves heroic without softening his nihilistic edge and Guinness who won a Best Actor Oscar one of the productions seven wins disappears as only he can into Nicholsons brittle duty-driven delusional psychosis His final glimpse of self-knowledge remains an astonishing moment--story character and image coalescing with explosive impact r r Like Leans Lawrence of Arabia The Bridge on the River Kwai has been beautifully restored and released in a highly recommended widescreen version that preserves its original aspect ratio --Sam Sutherland span class h1 Stills from The Bridge on the River Kwai click for larger image / / span r border 0 cellpadding 4 width 100 cellspacing 4 align center valign top the theme belongs in a fortune cookie to experience the films pagan power you have to see the movie But for decades we couldnt not really--not with so many versions all incomplete often in public-domain prints like smudged photocopies This Murnau Foundation restoration changes all that Some shots scenes and subplots may be lost forever but intertitles indicate how they fit into the original continuity and the characters individual trajectories Most crucially the images are crisp vibrant and three-dimensional instead of murky and flattened The composite sequences the Tower of
