Bach: The 6 Unaccompanied Cello Suites Sony Sony Melody of Rhythm: Triple Concerto & Music for Trio Koch Records In this era of cookie-cutter synthetic sounds that can be generated by virtually anyone and everyone its almost impossible to make music that can be instantly recognized as unique and incomparable To have that music revealed as both groundbreaking and accessible to all is an even rarer occurrence Banjo legend Bela Fleck tabla genius Zakir Hussain and double-bass master Edgar Meyer internationally-renowned virtuosi and composers have achieved that pinnacle with this release The centerpiece and catalyst for this album is The Melody of Rhythm Concerto a gorgeously haunting dynamic three-movement composition for banjo double bass and tabla Recorded live with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Leonard Slatkin the highly rhythmic work soars melding Indian classical rhythms with American roots-derived melodies and big-sky orchestral horizons The remaining trio pieces further explore a group dynamic that promises to gain in richness and nuance as they continue their travels throughout the world Fleck and Meyer have been collaborating for over 25 years inclduing the Grammy-winning Perpetual Motion and the classic Appalachian Journey with Yo Yo Ma Fellow Grammy winner Zakir Hussain is generally acknowledged to be the worlds greatest virtuoso of the tabla drums renowned for his cross-genre work with the likes of John McLaughlins Shakti Mickey Harts Planet Drum and Yo To Mas Silk Road Project For all three of these explorers an understanding of musical tradition and improvisation has led them to this common crossroads or as Bela Fleck described it in a recent Downbeat cover story getting together with some brothers he hadnt seen in some time The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the Universe Denon Records Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone Sony Sony Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers His soundtracks for The Mission The Good the Bad and the Ugly Once Upon a Time in America Cinema Paradiso and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace They not only add atmosphere they help tell the story For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma whose musical curiosity seems to be endless Outside the films these pieces tend to be lovely melodies mostly pretty sentimental stuff and in the best way gorgeous aural wallpaper The most moving are the two selections from The Mission but fans of Morricones music will find plenty to enjoy here Mas playing as always is exquisite---warm deeply felt given the circumstances and entirely idiomatic within the context Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer --Robert Levine Brahms: Complete Symphonies EMI Classics Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker have recorded the complete symphonies of Johannes Brahms live in a series of concerts from the Philharmonie Berlin This is a major recording of music that is central to the tradition of the 127-year-old orchestra and is bound to be as groundbreaking and revelatory as Rattles earlier recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic The combination of the incomparable sound and musicianship of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the iconoclastic visionary approach that has characterized Sir Simons music-making over the past thirty years is likely to result in a set of recordings that will challenge invigorate and refresh this well-known and cherished repertoire Rattles first Brahms recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker Ein deutsches Requiem won critical accolades and both Grammy and Classic FM/ Gramophone Awards Now Sir Simon and the Orchestra have committed to disc the complete Brahms symphonies recorded in concert at Berlins Philharmonie in Autumn of 2008 In the words of Die Zeit Simon Rattle has finally dared to tackle Brahms with the Berliner Philharmoniker He combines Furtw nglers monumentality with Karajans beautiful sound Rattle confirms that performing these works with the Berliner Philharmoniker which has been hailed as the worlds greatest Brahmsian orchestra gives you a possibility of colours that you have almost nowhere else I can say to this orchestra I need a different sound and the sound changes immediately Romanza Philips Philips From his childhood on the family farm in rural Tuscany to the worldwide stage Andrea Bocelli has achieved phenomenal success His singing is only partially the point and his fame owes much more to the aura of romance and the romantic archetype thats attached to him Romanza is by far Bocellis largest success winning adoration thanks to the swooning vocals and the easy sometimes lush always pop-safe instrumental textures and melodies As far as his opera chops go Bocelli has won the approval of Pavarotti but likely will not wow enthusiasts The upside is that Bocelli will likely grow the opera pie convincing labels to take on more operatic projects --Andrew Bartlett 25 Classical Favorites Vox (Classical) Romance of the Violin Sony Sony Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody many of them easily recognizable all of them exuding tranquility O mio babbino caro from Puccinis Gianni Schicchi opens the disc with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity Bellinis Casta diva from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bells hands his violin sings The middle movement of Mozarts 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin and Debussys The Girl with the Flaxen Hair is played with great warmth and sensuality It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides The light accompaniments always support with woodwinds prominent but used with grace This CD in short is a beauty a fine gift a lovely mood setter --Robert Levine Messiah (George Frederick Handel) London Philharmonic Orchestra Sparrow The Essential Yo-Yo Ma Sony Sony Here are three dozen pieces of music all played by Yo-Yo Ma culled from his extensive discography Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent his jazz seemingly spontaneous the Meditation from Thais simply ravishing Anything Goes a romp and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating Its really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here how entirely he becomes involved in it and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians This collection is a doozy--it is truly essential --Robert Levine
